Avisoft was founded as a sideline activity of the principal Mr. Raimund Specht in 1991. It has now evolved to a full-time task.
The first project was a DOS-based spectrogram software, called Avisoft-SONAGRAPH. It was a combination of hardware and software, because soundcards were not available at that time. There were both desktop and notebook computer versions. The latter one used an external analog-to-digital converter connected to the printer port. That DOS-software was replaced by the new Windows-based Avisoft-SASLab Pro software in 1994.
Another early project was the development (both hardware and software) of a multi-channel sound-activated bird song acquisition system, based on HiFi video recorders, which were controlled optically (IR remote control) by a PC. Thanks to advances in computer technology, that functionality is now replaced by the new Avisoft-RECORDER.
Some activities were focused on data banks for managing ornithological observation data (Ornibase). A GIS-like (Geographic Information System) front-end, called Avisoft-ATLAS allowed the user to input geographical coordinates by mouse-clicking certain points on a digitized map (both raster and vector format).
Hardware development activities include a solid-state ultrasound recorder (time-expansion bat-detector with realtime acoustic monitoring). These devices are manufactured by Laar Bioacoustics.
One of the most recent innovations by Avisoft is the UltraSoundGate system.
